How to Participate in the Metro Louisville
COMMUNITY MUSIC PARTNERSHIP

What is the Community Music Partnership?

The Community Music Partnership was created in 1986 by then-Jefferson County Judge-Executive Harvey Sloane, then-Louisville Board of Aldermen President Mike Carrell, and then-Louisville Federation of Musicians President John Roy, Jr. The intention was to create a convenient way for the City and County to provide free live musical entertainment to enhance the quality of public community events. Initially these performances took place in public parks, but over the years of the program it has been expanded to include indoor and outdoor venues including neighborhood picnics, charity events, concerts for the elderly and shut-ins, special seasonal events and many more occasions all over Jefferson County.

Who May Use the Program?

The CMP is available to not-for-profit organizations of many different types, including nursing homes, retirement communities, church carnivals, small cities, neighborhood associations, health fairs and community festivals. Occasionally government offices use it to enhance a particular event offered to their district or the entire community. Events must be free and open to the public, and not directly used for fundraising (although fundraising as a separate part of an event is not prohibited).

How Does It Work?

Organizations wishing to use the program should submit a request in writing, either on their letterhead or our CMP Request Form, to their Metro Councilperson. This request should state the date, time (start time and duration) and location of the event, and the band or type of music requested.

The Metro Council districts each have an annual budget for CMP events. Upon receipt of a request, the Metro Councilperson should at his or her earliest convenience inform the requesting organization if their request can be accommodated. If approved, the Metro Council will then fax, mail or email confirmation to the Louisville Federation of Musicians to process the request. Please note that the Local cannot confirm a band’s participation without Metro Council authorization. Approval of your Metro Councilperson is the most critical part of this process.

If a particular musician or band is requested, we will confirm the date with them; if you need assistance in choosing, we will help find the perfect group for your occasion. We then furnish a payroll sheet to the bandleader with schedule, location and contact information and any special needs regarding parking and set-up. These payroll sheets are signed by the musicians and a representative of the event, and are returned to our office and paid from a special escrow account. Metro Louisville is then billed for performances played. All transactions are recorded and kept on file in our office.
